He Was A Friend Of Mine
The Dead version is similar to a number of different variations of this
old folk song, but I've never been able to find one with the same verses
as the Dead version. In particular, I have not been able to find a version
with the "He pushed me on a swing" verse. When Dylan recorded it in
the early 1960's he credited a Chicago street singer named Blind Arvella
Gray, but I have not found any evidence that Gray ever recorded it. I know
there is a song with a similar title by Hoyt Axton and I have also been
looking for a recording by Mark Speolstra that is supposed to be similar to
the Dead version. Any help would be appreciated.
I Know You Rider
I'm looking for a recording of this song by Big Brother on an
album called Cheaper Thrills (possibly recorded after the death of
Janis Joplin)
or any recordings not listed in
the song archive. I've also seen this song with the title Woman Blue,
so be on the look out for that as well.
